VILLAGE: Paintings by Margaret Coe - May 22 – June 29, 2013
Schrager & Clarke Gallery presents the most recent installment in Margaret Coe’s exploration of shape and color. In the spring of 2005, during her second residency at the chateau in Rochefort-en-Terre, she became enamored with the geometric, yet organic forms of the Breton village rooftops. The 25 paintings in the current exhibit are based on her memories:

“No two houses were identical and no chimney was straight. It was impossible to extract the individual parts from the whole. The shapes and rhythmic directions of the parts seemed to invite color definition and compositional exploration. I came to think of the village as an aggregate of color shapes moving in multiple directions.”





Chromatic Migration-October 18 - November 19, 2011 
These paintings investigate the movement and counter-movement of color and space. Coe re-imagines the forms and the chromatic changes, and revises the original composition. She sometimes works on a piece up to 5 years before satisfied that she has extracted the essence of her experience. Locating her painting process; “between intention and dream.”; she feels an animated interaction between the patches of color and the spaces they create, like clouds moving and reconfiguring in the sky. The finished painting is a revelation, expressing a state of mind underlying the landscape.





Paintings About Place-March 2 - April 10, 2010 
Memories of travel in France and re-imaginings of familiar landscapes in Oregon.Coe approaches landscape painting with the blend of direct observation in nature and the fragile memory of specific places from her past.Regarding her work, Coe says, "A by-product of painting for hours on end in the natural landscape is the profound connection one makesto the subject. Certain qualities and shapes are committed to memory. They can be the subject of new, highly interpreted works. The original observations are transformed into themes. The idea is to experiment with motifs, color, and process in a larger format in search of a bolder vision.”

Chicago by Rail: New Work by Margaret Coe - June 4 – July 12, 2014

Schrager & Clarke Gallery is pleased to present new work by Eugene artist, Margaret Coe. Coe’s work, familiar to our gallery visitors, is distinguished by her vivid use of color. These new pieces are no exception.  

Inspired by a cross-country train trip, these 17 paintings depict American landscapes, towns, and cities. Bright cars drive past colorful storefronts; moonlight outlines nighttime drivers in stark white. Freight yards, power line towers, and industrial scenes appear along the rail line, in sharp contrast to soft rural landscapes and toy-like towns. As a group, the work captures the flickering, changing scene experienced through the train window.

MARGARET COE - EXHIBIT STATEMENT
CHICAGO BY RAIL; Retracing the Oregon Trail..in reverse

These paintings are interpretations of the American West as experienced from the window of a train...fleeting scenes viewed in rapid succession. The animation of the windows accompanied by a rhythm section {provided by the engine} and the insistent vibration of the tracks intensifies ones awareness of time and terroir. The series is about landscape and motion. It also strikes me as a metaphor for that universally shared reality: continuous change.

I was traveling with my husband in June of 2013 to visit our son and his family in East Aurora, New York. I took many a “Hail Mary” photograph as we chugged along. Back home in my studio, these shots became the basis and starting point for series of paintings. The subjects vary from lumber mills along the Columbia River to farm towns and cities viewed from the grittier side of the tracks. After our arrival in Chicago we made a night train connection to Buffalo. Therefore the series ends in Illinois, the launching point of the Lewis and Clarke expedition.

Karin Clarke Gallery is pleased to present an exhibit of new work by Eugene artist, Margaret Coe. Gallery visitors are probably familiar with Coe’s abstract landscapes, executed in vivid, moving color. Over the years, Coe has shared her experience of Brittany’s villages and her exploration of the mountains, valleys, and coastline of Oregon. Now she brings us her impressions from a recent trip to England.

 The current show contains a few watercolors painted on location, and a group of fifteen large paintings based on these studies and photographs taken while traveling. Coe works the canvas as a color construction. The subject – in this case, landscapes, often with buildings – and the palette are established in the earliest stages of the painting. Then comes long hours of experiments with color and forms, shapes emerging from juxtaposed color areas and the interaction of contrasting shapes. In speaking about her process, Coe says: “The meaning of the image seems to reveal itself during the process of painting. I know this and it motivates me to work into the painting again and again, layer over layer, day or night.”

A longtime resident of Eugene, Maragaret received her MFA from the University of Oregon in 1978. She studied with David McCosh, Andy Vincent and Frank Okada, and taught art for many years at the U of O, LCC, and the Maude Kerns Art Center.
Margaret Coe has been influenced by important Northwest artists, including Nelson Sandgren, Charles Heaney,and C.S. Price.

Coe’s work has been widely exhibited, is in the collections of the Jorden Schnitzer Museum of Art, the Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay, OR, and represented in both the Portland and Seattle Art Museum rental sales galleries.

Press Release, Italy 2016 Show: ​Karin Clarke Gallery is excited to announce a much-anticipated show of new works by Margaret Coe. Nineteen new oil paintings will be featured, the three largest were painted entirely in her studio. Two of those paintings are based on the interior of the Santa Maria Maddalena Church in Rome. The other is based on the rolling hills of the Cotswold landscape in England (which she started in 2015 as a demonstration for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute). Later, in her studio, she reimagined it as a stormy landscape with zoomorphic clouds.

The remaining 16 paintings were all painted on location in Umbria, Italy and Rome in May and June of 2016. Most of these paintings were further developed and completed in her Eugene studio.

Coe states: This work is a continuation of ideas started in my last show in which images of English towns and sites were presented as musings on architectural forms in various light conditions. Here the notion of forms in a particular light or atmosphere is advanced. This is, however, a decided break from the cubist orientation of my Village series. Periodic stylistic change has been a given throughout my creative life. Some of the new work is taking a route toward symbolism that is different from but reminiscent of my 1980's (Ribbon) work. In the present case a narrative or a reverie emerges in my mind as I ruminate on a subject or place. This is, of course, an entirely different process than the conscious constructions and deliberate symbols of the work of the 1980's. The canvas has always been a spiritual as well as physical reality for me. In the life of my mind that which happens on canvas functions as my real experience.

Margaret Coe:  New Painting
November 1 – 25, 2017

Karin Clarke Gallery is pleased to present an exhibit of over 20 new works by Eugene artist, Margaret Coe. This exhibit is to run concurrent with the much-anticipated retrospective, Mark Clarke and Margaret Coe: Our Lives in Paint, on display from October 21, 2017 to April 1, 2018, at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

This show includes a mix of her recent work. Over the years, Coe has depicted Oregon from all angles! During last winter’s storm, she began a close-to-home series called “Window View.” Landscapes of Laurel Hill Valley from this series are included. 

Last spring, Coe traveled to Italy and returned with a group of small paintings done on-site in Venice and at Lake Como. Upon returning to her studio in Eugene, Coe explored more personal interpretations of the Italian scenes in four, larger, acrylic paintings. These Italian pieces round out the current show.

This exhibit demonstrates both Coe’s mastery in working with oils and acrylics, and will be a fascinating complement to the Museum exhibit, which shows her works through the last five decades. Margaret Coe: The City of Light
October 17 - December 1
​The Karin Clarke Gallery, located at 760 Willamette Street in downtown Eugene, will exhibit the latest collection of oil paintings by Margaret Coe from October 17 though December 1. “The City of Light” features 22 large and mid-sized paintings that were created during and Coe’s five week stay in Italy earlier this year.
“In 2017, I spent two weeks in Venice, and found that I stayed very close to areas that I was familiar with. When I returned this year, I was able to spend much more time exploring the city, which really had a significant impact on the work I was able to create” says Coe. “I really felt like I was able to make a much deeper connection to my surroundings, and to my work this time.”
Working in both the plein-air style and studio setting, this exhibition features some paintings that were created using a mixed method approach where Coe started select works on site, and finished them later in her studio. In these examples, Coe was able to create pieces that were highly interpretive to her surroundings, but also took inspiration from the canvas itself. 
Prior to her trip, Coe invested in fine-grade, linen canvas, which was a departure from her normal selection of standard cotton canvas. As a result to using a new material, her paintings took on a new lightness and transparency. She found that the softness of the linen inspired her to use a more tender approach to her pieces that were painted on site. 
“This collection of work really shows the connection that I had made with Italy during this last trip. I was able to experience the beauty of Venice through painting on a very responsive canvas,” says Coe. “During my time there, I found that I was in a place where myself, the canvas, and Venice were all in harmony.”
